Fare trade
The group of Manhattan College from New York take a journey on the fair trade road. They first visit a cocoa factory where the benefits of fair trade products are explained to them. We realize that Americans should consume more of these products. Lunch is taken at the center Mujeres Esperanza. The women of this center have prepared us a feast and show us how they are able to make wine and molasses from cocoa. The day concludes with a reflection in the mountains.
An important meeting ...
Young people from Manhattan College meets the Superior General of the Christian Brothers of the La Salle "Alvaro Rodriguez. We had the privilege of meeting Ramon Alburquerque, Vice-President of the Dominican Republic. Several important characters were at the celebration. The Brothers celebrate 75 years of involvement in youth education in the Dominican Republic. Happy birthday!
A day in an orphanage
It is a day of work for the students of Manhattan College of New York at the orphanage "Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos" . They have the privilege to really get into the skin of the dominican people who work 7 days a week all day in the sunshine and heat. Manhattan College is able to leave their mark by working in the major garden of the orphanage. It is nice to see that there is still hope for poor young people without parents!

A day in the bario
Today, Manhattan College group visits the capital of Santo Domingo.There, the La Salle brothers welcome us in their school. It is a primary and secondary school and there is also a technical school nearby. Students visit the barrio Simone Bolivard in silence where another face of the world is presented. Many are left in sorrow with inner reflection and questions. We take lunch with dominican sharing about our dreams in life. The evening ends with a testimony of a young man who is studying international law with the university sponsorship program. Thanks to the brothers to have welcome us.

Second day of Manhattan College
Today, the Manhattan College group visits two bateyes. They learn about these poor regions situated far away from the major roads. The young students are discouraged to see that most people have no jobs, therefore no income. They are trying to survive! After lunch, they visit the sugar cane factory that has been closed. It explains the lack of jobs in the bateyes. The evening is ended with a group reflection,

What a great group! A group that has made huge steps after only one day. You could say that they are living a rapid growth spurt. We can already see that they will be having a maturity advance on many young people when returning to New York.
Welcome to a group from New York, USA
Manhatan College arrive amoung us with many generous donations. The group is motivated for the week, and spend a first evening with there host familly. The night ends with a small visite and ajusting to the new enviroment.
