The group

At the end of the week program the students of the schools are invited to do some volunteer work in an orphenage. Also, the students had a chance to meet some teachers in Counsuelo. A moment to understand together that to change a country things are been done by education. A week full of challenges. Thanks to the adults of Mother Teresa and St. Joseph Catholic High School to have given a chance to the young people of your area to live such an experience.

Meeting the teachers in Consuelo

A special moment

A moment to share and celebrate with the adults in charge of the groups of Mother Teresa and St. Joseph High School. The dominicans invite us and organized a supper and fiesta . Gracias !

Fare trade ...

It is a day of learning and resting for the Mother Teresa and St-Jospeh group. We first visit a fair trade cacao factory and see the process of fermentation with the cacao beans. Who knew chocolate came from these fermeted, smelling cacao beans! We then hop into a truck which takes us to a the Esperanza Mujeres Center. A delicious lunch awaits us there. We then end the day with a reflection in the high mountains where we take the time to be with ourselves and to write in our journals!!

A full day in the Capital Santo Domingo

Today the group is faced with a reality that no one wants to see. They are off to the capital Santo Domingo where they visit the La Salle school and meet with the director. 1200 young students coming from the barrios nearby are presently studying in their primary, secondary and technical school. After a painful walk in silence in the barrios and seeing complete poverty, misery, pollution, we realize that their is a bit of hope left for these people living in these places. It is people like the La Salle brotheres that give some of that hope. We end the night with a testimony of two ladies studying medecin with our university sponsoring program.

Visiting the bateyes

It is an emotional, frustrating yet educational day for the students visiting the bateyes. They learn more about bateyes and see the hurtful reality of poor people living there. The mayor of the town explains us reasons behind their poverty. No jobs, too many children and not enough money to eat. They are fighting to survive. We end the night with a difficult reflection where many tears are shed yet it is an opportunity for the group to unite as one.

School visit

Today the group visits a school near their receiving families. They have the opportunity to meet and converse with the children that are studying at the school. The children are very excited to have the canadiens amoung them. Visiting the school also gives them the opportunity to learn more about the education system in the Dominican Republic.

The first day

The introduction has been made ! St-Joseph’s and Mother Teresa’s students visited San Pedro de Macoris’s park a place of great history. They then took a walk to the ocean to realize that they are surrounded by water and that they are on an island!
